On Sale Today: “She’s Coming Home” by the Zombies

Mar. 27, 1965 - On sale today is “She’s Coming Home,” a new single written by keyboardist Rod Argent and recorded by his band, the Zombies. The B-side is “I Must Move.”

The song has early origins in Argent’s life; he lifted segments from the 1946 song “Magnificat and Nunc dimittis” by Herbert Howells, which he had heard in boys’ choir. Characterized by its unusual chord progression, the song was recorded on March 2.

“She’s Coming Home” was one of two Argent compositions recorded during the session, along with “I Want You Back Again.” Two other songs were recording during that session, bassist Chris White’s ‘I Must Move” and lead vocalist Colin Blunstone’s “Just Out of Reach.”

The Zombies formed in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, in 1961. They had their first British and American hit last year with “She’s Not There.” A follow-up single, “Tell Her No,” was also successful, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this month.
