Packers to Face College-All Stars at Soldier Field

Aug. 2, 1962 - The College All-Stars will oppose the NFL champion Green Bay Packers tomorrow night in Soldier Field before 75,000. The Packers are favored by three touchdowns. The collegians are basing their hope for an upset on playing a wide-open game, probably pinned to the throwing arm of John Hadl of Kansas (pictured #21), captain of the offensive team. “I’ll guarantee we won’t be hitting the line three times in a row,” said Coach Otto Graham of the All-Stars. “The Packers won’t push us around, either. I just hope we don’t make any errors.” In the All-Star backfield will be Hadl, Angelo Dabiero of Notre Dame, James Saxton of Texas, and Curtis McClinton of Kansas. Behind these men are such stars as Bob Ferguson of Ohio State and Ronnie Bull of Baylor, both hard runners; Roman Gabriel of North Carolina State, a fancy passer; and Lance Alworth of Arkansas. The offensive backfield of the Packers will include Bart Starr, quarterback; Paul Hornung and Boyd Dowler, halfbacks; and Jim Taylor, fullback.
