Nov. 6, 1961 - The tendency of Hollywood producers to replace Broadway stars with movie talent when plays are converted into films has won qualified support from Paul Newman, who has been equally successful on Broadway and in Hollywood. He recently finished playing the male lead in the MGM movie “Sweet Bird of Youth,” in which he starred on Broadway. “A good actor in the theatre,” Mr. Newman said, “is not necessarily as good in movies. Certain adjustments have to be made for the movie medium.” There is the argument that stage stars are not good movie box office. “Most people in the theatre are not movie personalities in the Hollywood sense,” said Mr. Newman. “So, I guess you can’t really blame Hollywood for trying to get good box-office names when they have put a big bundle of money into a movie.”
