Phillies Beaten by Cubs, 9-2, for 17th Consecutive Loss; Approach Record for Futility

Aug. 14, 1961 - Ernie Banks and Jerry Kindall drove in 7 runs today and led the Cubs to a 9-2 victory over Philadelphia. The decision sent the Phils to their 17th consecutive loss, 2 short of the modern National League record set by Boston in 1906 and tied by Cincinnati in 1914. The overall National League Mark of 24 was set by Cleveland when it played in the league in 1899. The American League mark is 20. It was set by Boston in 1906 and tied by Philadelphia in both 1916 and 1943.
