President and First Lady Visit Newport, R.I.

Sept. 14, 1962 - President and Mrs. Kennedy were guests of honor tonight at a dinner given by the Australian Ambassador, Sir Howard Beale, in Newport, R.I., on the eve of the international yacht race for America’s Cup. The dinner was held in the great hall of The Breakers, a rococo mansion where the Vanderbilts spent the summer when Newport was the favorite resort of American millionaires. Sir Howard offered a toast to the President, and Mr. Kennedy replied with a toast to Queen Elizabeth II of England. Tomorrow, Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy and their guests will witness the first of the races from the destroyer U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. The destroyer was named for the President’s elder brother, who was killed in World War II.
