President Kennedy and Jack Benny Exchange Quips

May 20, 1962 - Much of the President’s talk at Madison Square Garden last night was in a light vein and devoted to returning comic shafts that had been aimed in his direction by the entertainers. Jack Benny, who was one of the masters of ceremonies, had remarked that “the amazing thing to me is how a man in a rocking chair can have such a young wife.” President Kennedy, in his turn, referred to his approaching birthday on May 29, when he will be 45 years old, and commented that he was very glad Mr. Benny had come to a birthday party for “an older man,” a reference to Mr. Benny’s perennial age of 39.
