President Kennedy Announces Plans to Attend Opening of 1964 New York World’s Fair

Apr. 22, 1963 - President Kennedy used a special telephone at the White House today to set in motion a clock that will record the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until the New York World’s Fair opens exactly one year from today. More than 800 persons who had gathered in Flushing Meadow Park in Queens, New York, at the site of both the 1939 and the 1964 World Fairs heard the President make a brief speech in which he promised that “366 days from today, I plan to be there.” The extra day is because 1964 is a leap year. He ended the call by stating, “We have a deadline to meet and by dialing, 1-9-6-4, I launch the final phase of this great effort.”
