President Kennedy Arrives in Newport, R.I.

Sept. 12, 1963 - President Kennedy arrived in Newport, R.I., tonight for a 10th wedding anniversary celebration at the summer home of Mrs. Kennedy’s stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh D. Auchincloss (pictured), at Hammersmith Farm. The President’s plane landed at Quonset Naval Air Station, across Narragansett Bay from Newport. Earlier in the day, Mrs. Kennedy, accompanied by their two children, had flown by helicopter to Newport from Hyannis Port, Mass., where they had spent most of the summer in a rented home on Squaw Island. Governor John Chafee of Rhode Island greeted the President and gave him a silver vase, a gift of the state.
