President Kennedy Begins Campaign Swing in New York City

Oct. 11, 1962 - Robert M. Morgenthau (pictured to the President’s left) attempted today to link his fortunes as Democratic-Liberal candidate for Governor of New York to President Kennedy. He met the President at La Guardia Airport when Mr. Kennedy arrived at 2 p.m. to start a 5-state tour this weekend on behalf of Democratic candidates. With two of his running mates on this year’s state ticket, Mr. Morgenthau rode to the Carlyle Hotel with the President. Later, Mr. Morgenthau conferred privately with the President, who he reported gave him his “unequivocal endorsement” in the race against Governor Rockefeller. They also made a series of 20-second television commercials together. The first of these will be shown in New York on Tuesday.
