President Kennedy Calls for Greater Efforts to Assist Handicapped

Nov. 7, 1963 - President Kennedy called for greater efforts today to employ the handicapped. He appealed to labor, private industry, and the government for extra support. Mr. Kennedy addressed the chairmen and secretaries of committees on employment of the handicapped that have been created by the governors of all 50 states. They were opening a two-day workshop in Washington. The chairman of the President’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, General Melvin Maas, Marine Corps, has been blind for many years. He gave Mr. Kennedy a new committee seal displaying an eagle against a background of blue, with the name of the committee inscribed in gold around the edge. The word “physically” has been removed from the title of the Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, in accordance with Mr. Kennedy’s decision to expand its role to include the mentally handicapped.
