Sept. 27, 1963 - President Kennedy entered the homestretch on his tour of the West today, picking up speed and dropping off gifts along the way. In Oregon, Mr. Kennedy announced new Defense Department and Coast Guard installations that would revive the dormant naval facility at Tongue Point. In Utah, he pulled a switch that activated hydroelectric generators at the massive Flaming Gorge Dam on the Green River in the Colorado River basin. In Tacoma, Wash., his major appearance of the day, he got a roaring reception from 15,000 in Cheney Stadium. The President capped off his busy at the Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park in California (pictured), where he will spend the night. Tomorrow, the “nonpolitical” conservation tour will come to an end with Presidential appearances at the Whiskeytown Reservoir in California and at the Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
