President Kennedy Hears Concert for Handicapped Children at White House

Aug. 22, 1961 - A musical program entertained 345 handicapped children today on the south lawn of the White House. They sipped lemonade and ate cookies under a big Army tent and listened to the youth orchestra of the Brevard Music Camp of North Carolina. The main attraction, however, was President Kennedy. He greeted the orchestra, shook hands with dozens of the youngsters, tousled one or two heads, and had a smile for all. When Mr. Kennedy went back to work in the West Wing, he left his office door open so he could hear the music.
