July 7, 1963 - President Kennedy played golf today for the first time since having injured his back two years ago. The President used to play golf, usually shooting in the 70’s, but gave it up on doctor’s orders after having reactivated an old back injury during a tree-planting ceremony in Ottawa in May 1961. This afternoon, he played the “inside five” at the Hyannisport Club, a difficult course about half a mile from his rented home on Squaw Island. The inside five is made up of the 1st, 2nd, 16th, 17th, and 18th holes, all within sight of the clubhouse. Aides declined to disclose the President’s score. Earlier, the President went to 10 a.m. Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis, received a briefing on the railroad crisis, and went cruising aboard the Honey Fitz.
