Sept. 21, 1961 - President Kennedy said today in a Columbus Day proclamation that the "intrepid spirit and steadfast faith" of the explorer were a constant inspiration to the nation. Kennedy asked the American people to fly the flag and hold appropriate ceremonies on Oct. 12 -- the 469th anniversary of the discovery of America.
