July 1, 1963 - At the Quirinal Palace in Italy tonight, President Kennedy (pictured with Italian President Antonio Segni and his wife Laura) met with several important Italian political leaders. The President talked for 20 minutes with Pietro Nenni, leader of the Left-wing Socialists, and for 10 minutes with Aldo Moro, head of the Christian Democrats. He also spoke with former Premier Amintore Fanfani, Giovanni Malagodi of the Liberal party, and he met with Palmiro Togliatti, the Communist leader, in a reception line. “It’s nice to be in your country,” Mr. Kennedy told Mr. Togliatti. The two men had no further discussions. The President will be received in private audience by Pope Paul VI tomorrow morning and will go to Naples in the afternoon to inspect NATO headquarters there. He will return to Washington from Naples. He is expected to arrive in Washington at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
