May 7, 1962 - President Kennedy (pictured with Mary Josephine “Josie” Fitzgerald,” his 97-year-old grandmother) today proclaimed next Sunday as Mother’s Day, to be observed across the nation to express “the boundless affection, respect, and gratitude we feel for our mothers.” The President directed that the American flag be displayed on all public buildings Sunday and asked that flags be displayed at homes. The annual proclamation was issued in accordance with a Congressional resolution approved in 1914 to set aside the second Sunday in May each year as Mother’s Day.
