President Kennedy Reflects on the First Anniversary of Election

Nov. 8, 1961 - On the first anniversary of his election, President Kennedy looked back upon some of his accomplishments in office and found them good. At his news conference, he defended his 1960 campaign statements charging a deterioration of the United States’ military strength in relation to that of the Soviet Union. He also cited contributions made by his Administration to the national security. Mr. Kennedy declared that if he were running for the Presidency today, the emphasis of his campaign “would be exactly what it was last fall.” The President also defended his Administration against the charge of being “anti-business.” “There is no long-range hostility between business and the Government,” he said. “There cannot be. We cannot succeed unless they succeed.”
