President Kennedy Visits Irish Convent

June 27, 1963 - President Kennedy made an unexpected stop at a convent near Wexford, Ireland today to meet his third cousin, Mother Superior Clement, who describes herself as “the relation nobody knows about.” The mother superior, a Fitzgerald, is related to the President on his mother’s side. A nun of the Loreto order, she has been in charge of the Loreto convent outside Wexford for about a year. The President was returning to Dublin from visits to cousins in New Ross when his motorcade stopped at the convent gate. He walked into the grounds, accompanied by an aide. Mother Clement said the President “shook hands with me and the rest of the community” of 27 nuns.
