President Kennedy Welcomes Senegalese President to U.S.

Nov. 3, 1961 - President Kennedy and President Leopold S. Senghor (center) of Senegal exchanged views today on subjects ranging from poetry to African politics. The French-speaking African statesman and scholar, whose poetry has won wide acclaim in France, was welcomed at National Airport by Mr. Kennedy as a man whose writings “have sensed the aspirations of the people of Africa.” The U.S. regards Senegal as an outstanding example of a progressive new nation that has managed to combine an understandably militant policy against colonialism in Africa with respect for Western positions on major cold war issues.
