President Returns to Cape Cod with New Puppy

Aug. 13, 1963 - President Kennedy returned to Cape Cod today to take his wife home from the hospital to their summer home. He brought her and their two children a nine-week-old Cocker Spaniel puppy. Mrs. Kennedy will leave the hospital at 11 a.m. tomorrow. She gave birth by Caesarean section last Wednesday to a son who died two days later. The puppy the President brought with him was given to him in Ireland by the John Barry family. Press Secretary Pierre Salinger said the puppy was given to Mr. Kennedy at the Shannon Airport as he left on his way to England. Salinger identified the Barry family as cousins of the Kennedy family. The new puppy was temporarily named by newsmen “No. 8” because he is the eighth dog in the Kennedy family. Salinger said that Mrs. Kennedy’s condition was “fine” and that when she leaves the hospital “she is going to walk out.” A hospital spokesman said the First Lady had made “marvelous progress” in her recovery.
