American League Favored in All-Star Game Tuesday

July 8, 1961 - A capacity Candlestick Park crowd of more than 40,000 is expected to view San Francisco's first all-star game on Tuesday, which will be televised nationally. The American League will present a starting line-up consisting of six .300 hitters. The A.L., a 6-5 favorite to win, boasts the league's leading hitter in Norm Cash of the Tigers and the top two home run sluggers in Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. On the Americans bench will be such hitters as Yogi Berra and Elston Howard of the Yankees, Harmon Killebrew of Minnesota, Al Kaline of Detroit, and Nellie Fox of Chicago.
