East German Refugees Flood West Berlin

July 11, 1961 - The flight of East Germans to West Berlin has increased substantially in the last few days, refugee officials said today. Authorities were forced to open several unused reserve camps to shelter the 2,600 men, women and children (pictured) who crossed over to Western freedom since Saturday. The 20 camps normally in operation were filled to capacity. Under new restrictive measures announced today by the East German Communists, East German commuters with jobs in West Berlin will be barred from purchasing high-quality industrial goods in the East.
