July 15, 1961 - A blonde 24-year-old German woman won the title of Miss Universe today. She is Marlene Schmidt, who reached Stuttgart, her present home, from East Germany with her mother and a younger sister only a year ago. Miss Schmidt, an electronics worker, said she planned to buy a house with the $5,000 prize that goes with the title. She will also receive a $10,000 personal appearance contract and a $3,500 mink coat.
