July 18, 1961 - Opening in local theatres today is "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," a science-fiction melodrama from 20th Century-Fox. Irwin Allen wrote, produced and directed the film, with Walter Pidgeon, Joan Fontaine and Peter Lorre in the cast. When the Earth is threatened by a burning Van Allen Radiation Belt, U.S. Navy Admiral Harriman Nelson (Pidgeon) plans to shoot a nuclear missile at the Belt, using his experimental atomic submarine, the Seaview.
