Mantle Blasts 2 Homers, Tied with Maris at 35, as Yanks Beat Washington

July 18, 1961 - Mickey Mantle paced the Yankees to a 5-3 victory over the Senators today with his continued heavy slugging. He blasted two homers and moved into a tie with his teammate, Roger Maris, for major league leadership. The Yankee musclemen have hit 35 homers apiece in 89 games and jointly are running 17 games ahead of Babe Ruth's record 60-homer pace of 1927. Tonight's two awesome blasts over the lofty right-field fence of Griffith Stadium were Mantle's fifth and sixth in the six games the Yanks have played to date on their road trip. No one but Mickey has ever hit a fair ball out of Griffith Stadium. He did it in 1953 with a blast that cleared the wall in left-center. That mighty clout was measured at 565 feet.
