Nixon Praises Chambers as Solid Anti-Communist

July 11, 1961 - Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon (pictured right in 1948) praised Whittaker Chambers today as a man who had the courage to break with the Communists and atone for his mistake. Mr. Nixon and Mr. Chambers were associated in compiling evidence of a Communist conspiracy involving Alger Hiss, former State Department official, when Mr. Nixon was a Representative from California. Mr. Nixon said today, "Mr. Chambers' book 'Witness' is the most penetrating analysis of the true nature and deadly appeal of communism produced in this generation. It should be required reading for every American who is concerned by the threat of communism."
