Palmer Wins British Open; First American Since '53

July 15, 1961 - Arnold Palmer today became the first American since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win the British Open golf title. The Latrobe, Pa., professional finished with a four-under-par 284 for 72 holes at Birkdale, England, despite bad weather. Dai Rees of Wales, the British Ryder Cup captain, was second, one stroke back.
