July 11, 1961 - Whittaker Chambers (pictured) is dead. The man who branded Alger Hiss as his accomplice in a Soviet spy ring died of a heart attack at his farm in Westminster, Md., at 7 a.m. Sunday. Mr. Chambers' charges in 1948 that Mr. Hiss had given him State Department documents as part of a Communist spy apparatus - always vehemently denied by Mr. Hiss - led to the latter's conviction and imprisonment for perjury in 1951.
