July 9, 1961 - The Yanks polished off the Red Sox today for the third time in a row, 3-0, as Roland Sheldon scored his second consecutive shutout with a five-hitter and Roger Maris (pictured) crashed his 33rd homer. Then the Bombers did a complete flip-flop. They let Boston get a seven-run head start in the second game of the doubleheader. The handicap proved too large and they bowed, 9-6. The loss dropped the Yanks into second place behind the Tigers, who beat the Angels twice.
