May 10, 1963 - The Reds, their power unshackled, thrilled a Crosley Field ladies’ night crowd of 7,009 last night by going on their biggest scoring spree of the season in walloping the cellar-dwelling Houston Colts, 13-3, behind the 7-hit pitching of Jim Maloney. While the 22-year-old Maloney was breezing to his fourth victory in five decisions, the Reds, led by the incomparable Frank Robinson, clobbered the offerings of a quartet of Houston hurlers for 15 hits, including 2 homers and 3 doubles. Robinson enjoyed one of the biggest nights of his brillliant career, driving in 7 runs with 5 straight hits, including a pair of 3-run homers, in boosting his season’s RBI total to 22. Also very much in the spotlight was Vada Pinson, as the Reds moved within a game of the .500 mark and whispering distance of the first division. Vada drove in four runs with three hits, one a double. The Reds will spend the next two weeks on the road. New York is their first port of call. They drop into the historic Polo Grounds tonight for the first of four games with Casey Stengel’s red-hot Mets, who just finished sweeping a three-game set from the Phillies. Jimmy O’Toole, gunning for his seventh victory, will oppose former Milwaukee right-hander Carlton Willey in the opener.
