Rep. Roosevelt Unveils Stamp Bearing His Mother’s Likeness

Sept. 26, 1963 - The late Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt once said that she hated all pictures of herself because that she did not look good in any of them. “But if you have to have a picture,” she told a son, “that’s the best one.” The son, Representative James Roosevelt (D-Calif.) told the story yesterday at a ceremony unveiling a 5-cent postage stamp bearing the likeness of the picture Mrs. Roosevelt had chosen. The stamp will be printed in lavender with the lettering in white. Mrs. Roosevelt died last Nov. 7. The stamp will be issued Oct. 11 on the 79th anniversary of her birth.
