Aug. 2, 1962 - When Tony Kubek (pictured with Phil Rizzuto in 1956) rejoins the Yankees in Chicago tomorrow after eight months in the Army, he will be handed his old uniform and directed by Manager Ralph Houk to “try this on, but only for size.” Houk has no plans to play Kubek during the three-game weekend series that starts tomorrow against the White Sox at Comiskey Park. “How do I know what shape Tony is in?” Houk asked today as the league-leading Yanks arrived in town from Washington. “And if he isn’t in condition, how long will it take him to get there?” Managers are reluctant to break up a winning combination. The Yankees have won eight of their last nine games. The Bombers got where they are with young Tom Tresh at shortstop. The rookie has been hitting consistently.
