Robinson Hangs On for Split Decision over Greaves

Sept. 26, 1961 - Sugar Ray Robinson, floored by a left hook to the midsection near the end of the eighth round, hung on last night for a split decision over the Canadian middleweight champion, Wilf Greaves. Robinson, the 41-year-old former champion who is trying to start another comeback, looked sharp only in the middle rounds. In the eighth, Robinson unleashed a flurry of right uppercuts, left jabs, and right crosses. He outboxed and outpunched the slower, awkward Greaves with left and right hooks. Eventually, he tired, and Greaves sank home a whistling left hook to the stomach just before the bell. Robinson sank in pain, hands clutching his midsection. The referee, Lou Handler, counted to only "one," before Robinson was saved by the bell.
