Feb. 14, 1963 - As the initial jockeying for the 1964 Republican presidential nomination continues, Governor Nelson Rockefeller (right) appears to be consolidating his position as front-runner with GOP voters across the land. As of today, about one GOP voter in two says he would like to see the New York governor as their candidate for the presidency the next time around. At the same time, Senator Barry Goldwater’s strength has slipped somewhat from his showing a month ago. Still in second place, Goldwater’s share of GOP support has dropped from 26% to 17%. Third in the current lineup is Michigan Governor George Romney, named by 13% of the GOP rank-and-file.
