Roman Gabriel Leads East to Victory in All-America Bowl

June 29, 1962 - Roman Gabriel (pictured with ball) of North Carolina State and Bob Ferguson of Ohio State, 1961 college stars who are headed to the NFL, led the East to a 13-8 victory over the West today in the second All-America Bowl football game in Buffalo, N.Y. It attracted 22,759 fans. Gabriel, a future Los Angeles Ram, plunged from the 1-yard line on a quarterback sneak for one East touchdown in the third period. Ferguson, a fullback slated to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, raced 38 yards for the final score in the fourth period. Ferguson was voted the most valuable player in the game. Of the 60 former collegians in the game, 58 already had been signed by the pro clubs — 28 in the NFL, 18 in the AFL, and 12 in Canada.
