Royals top 76ers in Philly

Mar. 1, 1964 - The Cincinnati Royals got a pair of stunning performances from its two marvelous young pros, Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas, and swept by the 76ers, 117-114, last night at the Philadelphia Arena.

The Big O, wowing a slim crowd of 2,166 with his usual assortment of magic, scored 43 points, while Lucas, in a breathtaking backboard show, picked off 40 rebounds and added 28 points. Not only were those 40 rebounds a personal pro high for himself, but they were a league high this season.

The Royals, after playing footsy with the 76ers for three quarters, broke away in the final period to cinch the win, their second in consecutive nights over Philadelphia. The victory, their 49th of the year, enabled them to keep pace with the division-leading Celtics, who still lead the East chase by 2½ games.

The 76ers lost another match when their co-owner, lawyer Ike Richman, was ordered off the press row by referee Earle Storm in the first half for abusive remarks at the officials. The Royals bench also got a warning from Storm to “shut your mouth” — and they complied. The next time Storm looked over, the whole bench had a patch of adhesive tape across their mouths.

The Royals move over to Baltimore this afternoon for a game with the Bullets. Then comes New York Tuesday before two big matches with the Celtics.
