Rumors of Mets-Dodgers Trade: Snider for Craig

Feb. 26, 1963 - Duke Snider’s name has been cropping up in a prospective trade that would bring pitcher Roger Craig of the New York Mets back to the Dodgers. The fact that other leading contenders, including the Giants, have bolstered their pitching isn’t lost on Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley and general manager Buzzie Bavasi. The Stan Williams-for-Bill Skowron trade with the Yankees filled a need at first base for the Dodgers, but it put another gap in an already porous pitching brigade, especially if Sandy Koufax’s finger hasn’t properly healed. The power-packed Giants had pitching just as good as the Dodgers last year, and they have added Billy Hoeft and Jack Fisher of Baltimore. But potential holes on the Dodgers’ pitching staff seem to have been disregarded by Las Vegas oddsmakers who made the Dodgers a 9-5 early-line favorite to win the pennant. They quoted the champion Giants at 12-5 and Cincinnati third at 3-1.
