Sammy Davis Jr. to Star in "Golden Boy" on Broadway

May 1, 1962 - Sammy Davis Jr. (left) will star in the proposed musical version of Clifford Odets’ “Golden Boy.” The announcement was made today by Hillard Elkins, who promises to bring the show to Broadway in the fall of 1963. Mr. Davis, who made his Broadway debut in “Mr. Wonderful” (1956), will be seen as Joe Bonaparte, who is undecided whether to be a violinist or a prizefighter. Luther Adler created the part in 1937, and John Garfield did it in the 1952 revival.
