Sept. 3, 1962 - Jack Sanford scored his 14th straight victory and his 20th of the season today as the San Francisco Giants moved up to 2-and-a-half games behind league-leading Los Angeles by beating the Dodgers, 7-3. The Giants took command in the third inning when Willie Mays drove in 3 runs and broke a 1-1 tie with his 42nd homer. The opener of the 4-game series drew a sellout crowd of 54,418 — a Dodger Stadium record. Sanford, a 20-game winner for the first time in his career — he won 19 in 1957 — yielded 8 hits, struck out 5, and walked none. He hasn’t been beaten since he dropped a 5-0 decision to Cincinnati on June 13.
