Sept. 11, 1962 - Jack Sanford posted his 16th straight pitching victory and 22nd for the season today by blanking Pittsburgh, 2-0. The triumph was the seventh straight for the pennant-contending San Francisco Giants. Sanford hurled an eight-hitter, gave one walk, and struck out three as he continued the longest victory string in the majors this season. The husky right-hander lost for the sixth time on June 13 and has not been beaten since. The modern record — 19 straight triumphs in one season — was set by Rube Marquard of the New York Giants in 1912. Felipe Alou paced the San Francisco attack with 2 hits, including his 25th homer.
