Secretary McNamara Cautiously Optimistic on Vietnam

July 23, 1962 - Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara has predicted eventual victory for the West in South Vietnam. “It will take years rather than months, but the Communists eventually will be defeated,” he said on his arrival in Honolulu today. Mr. McNamara is there for top level meetings with military and diplomatic officials on American involvement in South Vietnam. A South Vietnamese Government source said today that a two-day sweep last week near the border of Cambodia wiped out a Viet Cong heavy weapons training center. Viet Cong guerrillas opened fire on a passenger bus 100 miles south of Saigon last Friday, killing a man and seriously wounding a woman passenger, according to today’s military communiqué.
