Sen. Javits Supports Gov. Rockefeller for President in 1964

May 23, 1962 - Senator Jacob K. Javits today became the first prominent Republican political leader to propose Governor Rockefeller as the Republican Presidential nominee in 1964. The New York Republican told a National Press Club luncheon that Mr. Rockefeller “has exclusive priority as far as I am concerned” among Republican Presidential hopefuls. “As everybody who knows me knows, I have been partial to Governor Rockefeller and his views,” Senator Javits declared. Senator Javits said that Mr. Rockefeller’s recent divorce was “a deeply personal manifestation” that had not injured his prospects for reelection in New York this fall or his “status as an important national or international figure.”
