Soviet Communists Seek "Peaceful Coexistence," But Say Capitalism Doomed

July 29, 1961 - The Communist party of the Soviet Union reaffirmed today its ideological thesis that this generation can avert thermonuclear war. Laying down a fundamental program to guide the Soviet bloc for years to come, the party declared: "Peaceful coexistence of the Socialist and capitalist countries is an objective necessity for the development of human society." However, the document asserted that capitalism was doomed. "Socialism inevitably will take over from capitalism everywhere," it declared. "Such is the objective law of the development of society." The declaration will be submitted for formal adoption by the 22nd party congress that will meet in October.
