Aug. 6, 1962 - Izvestia, the official Soviet Government newspaper, reported today that the death of Marilyn Monroe was “something bigger than personal tragedy.” “It has acquired a social significance and pronounced a sentence — unfortunately not of death — on a monster which makes a travesty of art, virtue, truth, and nature,” the paper declared. “The name of this monster is Hollywood.” Izvestia portrayed Miss Monroe as an actress whose artistic aspirations had been “stifled and made fun of.” Meanwhile, residents of Moscow could not recall ever having seen a motion picture in which Miss Monroe appeared. Most United States pictures shown in Moscow depict the hardships of life in Western society.
