Nov. 1, 1961 - The Soviet people learned today that the body of Joseph Stalin has been removed from the Lenin Mausoleum and buried near the Kremlin wall. The removal of Stalin’s body from the high shrine of Communism was decreed Monday by the 22nd congress of the Soviet Communist party after the late dictator had been denounced again as a brutal tyrant. Within the red granite mausoleum, visitors viewed the glass-topped sarcophagus of Lenin in its accustomed place under a soft, pink light. The space nearby where Stalin’s body had rested was vacant. Police stood by as some Russians gathered in knots to defend Stalin, some to denounce him. One man among those who attacked Stalin said: “We would not have been able in his day to talk so freely here.” A pilot told of what Stalin had meant to him during the war. “We went into battle in his name,” he said. “We were ready to die for him. How can I believe everything they say about him now?”
