Jan. 7, 1963 - Coach Buddy Parker (left) of the Pittsburgh Steelers said today he will probably be back with the team next season but without his star quarterback and fellow Texan, Bobby Layne (right). “I plan to talk with Mr. Art Rooney [Steelers owner] this week,” Parker said. “I can’t say officially, but if he wants me back, I’m sure we can work something out. But I hope Bobby is retiring. I have asked him to retire and personally, I think he will. I think Bobby has been the greatest quarterback I have ever seen in all my years in the NFL, but it is time he should quit. All great players must quit playing someday.” Layne, a six-time Pro Bowler, broke into the league with the Chicago Bears in 1948. He won three championships with the Detroit Lions, in 1952, 1953, and 1957.
