Steelers Top Cowboys as Layne Sets Pass Record

Sept. 23, 1962 - Bobby Layne broke the NFL record for touchdown passes today in guiding the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 30-28 victory over the Cowboys in Dallas. Layne passed Sammy Baugh’s total of 187 with a 38-yard toss to Buddy Dial in the second quarter. He then hit John Henry Johnson with a swing pass for 16 yards, the 189th touchdown pass of his career. A 74-yard ground surge by Johnson and Joe Womack, with Womack going the final 4 yards for his second touchdown, put the game out of reach for Dallas. A 99-yard Cowboy pass play from Eddie LeBaron to Frank Clarke was nullified when the officials ruled that Clarke had stepped out of bounds. On the same play, a holding penalty in the end zone was also called, giving the Steelers an automatic safety.
