Oct. 28, 1963 - Ed Brown connected for four touchdown passes — three to Buddy Dial and an 85-yarder to Red Mack in the closing minutes of the game — to give the Steelers a 27-21 triumph over the Dallas Cowboys yesterday at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Mack, who caught the winning touchdown pass, took the ball on the 30 and outraced Mike Gaechter and Jerry Overton with less than 4 minutes left in the game. “In the huddle, I asked Red if I should throw short or long,” said Brown in the Pittsburgh dressing room afterward. “He got down there, and I let him have it.” “A half step more, and I wouldn’t have caught it,” Mack chimed in. He wound up with three catches for 129 yards. The Steelers scored twice in the last period after trailing, 21-13. The four touchdown passes by Brown overshadowed the feat of Billy Howton, who broke the career record of 488 pass receptions set by Don Hutson by catching 7 for 103 yards. Howton has caught 490 passes in a 12-year career. The key play in the game was a pass interception by Jim Bradshaw in the end zone after Dallas had driven to the Steelers 17 with less than two minutes to play. The competition gets tougher for Pittsburgh next Sunday, as it’s on to Milwaukee for a tussle with the champion Green Bay Packers.
