Oct. 6, 1962 - The recovery of a fumble by Gene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb (pictured at training camp) and a 24-yard touchdown run with an intercepted pass by Bob Schmitz sparked the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 13-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles today. Lipscomb’s recovery of Sonny Jurgensen’s fumble on the third play from scrimmage in the first quarter set up a field goal by Lou Michaels. Lipscomb, a tackle, pounced on the loose ball on the Philadelphia 16-yard line. Running plays by John Henry Johnson and Joe Womack picked up a first down on the 6, where the Eagles’ defense stiffened and held for three downs. Michael then booted his 3-pointer from the 14. Schmitz’s interception came on the first play after the next kickoff. The Steelers added 3 points early in the second quarter when Michaels kicked a field goal from 10 yards out.
