Steelers Top Eagles, 26-17, as Michaels Sets Field Goal Record

Dec. 10, 1962 - Lou Michaels (pictured during his collegiate years at the University of Kentucky), veteran left-footed placekicker, set an NFL season field goal record yesterday as he booted the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 26-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Franklin Field. The 235-pound former Kentucky star kicked 4 field goals, his second a 46-yarder early in the fourth period that snapped a 17-17 tie and continued the Steelers’ drive toward the NFL’s Runner-up Bowl at Miami next month. Michaels’ four three-pointers upped his seasonal total to 24, breaking the record of 23 established in 1953 by Cleveland’s Lou Groza. He also booted a pair of extra points as the Steelers swept the annual two-game series with their intrastate rivals. Philadelphia is now 3-9-1 for the season.
